Bay Area Asian American Zine Scene
Sunday, November 12, 2000 :: 09:37 a.m.
so i answered a ton, a ton, of questions for this article & not much of what i had to say got in. i had some serious dissing action going on with the professionalization of zines as resume-builders, & the importance of the queer & riot grrrl movements (which somehow was reduced to "observers say") but otherwise this article is pretty inoffensive. oh yeah, i'm in it briefly.

The Golf War
Thursday, November 2, 2000 :: 11:00 p.m.
this is a documentary about the struggles of a group of filipino farmers whose lands were illegally sold by the government to a development corporation on the advice of a u.s. "aid" agency. the development corporation wants to displace the farmers & build an enormous golf course and resort. argh.

Global Anti-Golf Movement
Thursday, November 2, 2000 :: 10:56 p.m.
golf -- why? the sport of luxurious lawns & segregated country clubs is also an environmental menace & an important element of the neocolonial tourist industry, displacing peasants & farmers from their lands & their current livelihoods, "compensating" (ha ha) them with low-wage jobs as caddies & housemaids. not much of a trade-off.

Victorian Sex Cry Generator
Wednesday, November 1, 2000 :: 06:50 p.m.
"i am stir'd beyond bearing with your furious agitation's within me, gorged and cramm'd, even to surfeit!" oh dear.

The Failure of Love as a Political Strategy
Wednesday, November 1, 2000 :: 01:35 p.m.
this is my latest column for punk planet (40) about riot grrrl and the failure of "girl love" to accomodate crucial political work around the issue of difference, i.e., race and to a lesser extent class.

Advertising in San Francisco
Friday, July 21, 2000 :: 04:45 p.m.
stephen bender writes a great article called, "capitalists of the world, unite! advertising the new economy in san francisco." it's a great, incisive critique of the "new" advertising approach heralded by the dot-com crisis -- an "ironic capitalism" in which multimedia gulch hipsters get tattoos of alan greenspan & the iconography of rebellion is appropriated by capitalist glee. i've seen & been disgusted by many of the local billboards & bus stop posters bender deconstructs, so this was a welcome read & applicable beyond the bay area.

Race & Punk Rock
Friday, July 21, 2000 :: 02:38 p.m.
i'm linking to myself here. this is the column i wrote for punk planet 37, inspired by a series of screenings of martin sorrondeguy's mas alla los gritos/beyond the screams, a thirty-minute documentary of chicano/latino punk & hardcore in america. i like it because it's probably the most coherent column i've written for pp so far. i think.

Colonial Hawaii
Wednesday, July 19, 2000 :: 09:16 p.m.
summi kaipa writes a short but smart article for the san francisco bay guardian about "colonial hawaii," & the politics of race & tourism on the islands.

Race & Riot Grrrl
Wednesday, July 19, 2000 :: 09:13 p.m.
alice of tiara.org writes a smart article on the problems with riot grrrl's approach to race & racism, especially "within the ranks."

Try Not To Think
Wednesday, July 19, 2000 :: 09:06 p.m.
broken pencil is consistently the best magazine focused on the so-called "zine culture," with great, well-chosen zine excerpts, fiction, & feature articles. this is one. called "try not to think," author krishna rau is in the middle of writing a book about racism & homophobia in rock, & punk rock. about time, i say, & this article says complicated things about what it means to be a person of color whose love of rock requires a concerted effort to "try not to think" about the racism, sexism, & homophobia of what you're listening to.
